2020s

Oppenheimer (2023)
Christopher Nolan is probably the single best director working in film and television today. He has reached that rarified space wherein his name alone warrants an immediate green light from studios and guarantees box-office draw. His films are generally always pushing the envelope of what a big budget studio blockbuster can be and he is one of only a few working directors today for whom you drop everything and insist on seeing his latest release at the cinema. Such was the ca

Anyone But You (2023)
Someone once said that romantic comedies are the hardest stories to execute, because you always know how it's going to end. Therefore it becomes about the journey and, for many romantic comedies, the chemistry between your two leads. Some films go for sweeping romance (The Notebook, Titanic etc), some go for something reflective of the times (The Apartment, 500 Days of Summer etc.), and some go for appealing to as many people as possible. This film certainly falls in the latt

Sr. (2022)
While the world is familiar with Robert Downey Jr, his father is perhaps lesser known. This is both a shame and also the inevitable result of a career which was devoted almost entirely to subversion. Robert Downey Sr was one of the more bizarre filmmakers in history, who developed an absurdist style all of his own and this film explores not only the career of the man but, more importantly, his relationship with his now mega-famous son.

The Age of Pleasure (2023) - Janelle Monae
Ever since her 2010 debut, Janelle Monae has continually pushed the boundaries to what is considered modern soul music. Until his death in 2016, none other than Prince himself took her on as a protégé. Stamps of approval don't come much larger.
Personally, I happened to catch her performance at Glastonbury 2024 and was, dare I say, blown away. Did it help that she got her nipple out? Who's to say. However, it was an excellent reminder of her immense skills and I immediately

Climb Your Mountain (2024) - Sir Ranulph Fiennes
"Life's too short to waste time on second-class ambitions. Go for the big ones."
Few people in life have gotten anywhere near the achievements of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He is one of the most famous explorers in the world and holds multiple endurance records, including being the oldest Brit to climb Everest and accomplishing the ridiculous feat of running 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents just four months after having a massive heart attack. So I would approach this book k

A Man Called Otto (2022)
When it comes to Tom Hanks, it's hard to think of many people who've had a better Hollywood career. His mere presence in a film is not only enough to secure bums on seats but almost single-handedly elicits a seal of approval that, no matter the film, you will not be wasting 2 hours of your time with old Tommy at the helm.

Moon Music (2024) - Coldplay
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Some things you cannot be objective about. Coldplay is one of them. Is Chris Martin annoying? Yes, probably. Is it ridiculous that some of their song titles are emojis? Again, yes. Have Coldplay become the living embodiment of what Gen Z consider deeply middle-aged and unhip? Yes they have. Do I give one sh*t? No I do not.

The Iron Claw (2023)
It is a rare treat these days to go into a film knowing absolutely nothing about it. Yet I somehow managed just that when scrolling through Amazon Prime looking for things to watch in the wee hours of the night. Something about the tagline intrigued me and I, falsely, assumed that it was a wrestling movie based on the famous Hart family. How wrong I was.
